He enlisted in the United States Army on July 12, 1988, attending One Station Unit Training at Fort Benning, GA. Upon completion, he was assigned to A Company, 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment stationed at Hunter Army Airfield where he served as Rifleman, Rifle Team Leader, and Anti-Tank Section Leader. In October 1993, he was assigned to the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 75th Ranger Regiment, Fort Benning, GA where he served as Senior Reconnaissance Leader, Assistant TECON Team Sergeant, and Team leader. In May, 1998, he was assigned to the Army Special Operations Command at Fort Bragg, NC, where he served as Operator Team Member, Assistant Team Sergeant, Team Sergeant, Troop Sergeant Major, Squadron Operations Sergeant Major, and Special Activities Troop Sergeant Major. He retired from the US Army in August, 2012. He deployed to Panama in support of Operation JUST CAUSE; Saudi Arabia in support of Operation DESERT STORM and Operation IRIS GOLD; Afghanistan in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM; and Iraq in support of Operations IRAQI FREEDOM and NEW DAWN.

Send Cooper to College in 2029 - The Tyson Nick Memorial Trust
On December 5th 2012, worlds apart, Summer Collins wrote the song, "Young" based on her own experience of losing her mom when she was 10 years old to Leukemia. At the very same time in Afghanistan, Tyson Nick (recently retired from the Army) was killed outside of their fire base in Afghanistan.
The Tyson family were long time friends with the Collins', and hearing of the tragedy upon her return from Nashville, she immediately knew what the song was really meant for.....not her, but for the Nick family. She received permission from her management in Nashville and L.A., and the song was released for her to donate to the family as a vehicle to raise money for Tyson's 3 children to attend college. Tyson had recently retired from the US Army Special Operations Command at Ft Bragg, NC, and for the purpose of spending more time with his family and their newest addition - Cooper. The Nick family had "started over" and had Cooper, who was just about 2 years old when his father was killed. Cooper's siblings are an older brother already a freshman in college, and a sister now a Jr in High School.
All proceeds from this song downloaded off of I Tunes belong to the Tyson Nick Memorial Trust. Though there are many scholarships available for fallen soldiers and even those retired, they do not always cover everything. Further, in 16 years, college will be 3-4 times the cost it is today.
Tyson's wife has earned the right through her sacrifice to this great nation, to continue to raise their youngest son at home, and not have to worry about the expenses of seeing her children make it to college.
