Capt. Kyle Aaron Comfort, 27, was a Fire Support Officer assigned to Company D, 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment at Fort Benning, Ga.. He was born on Oct. 17, 1982 in Alabama. He was killed in action on May 8, 2010 during a combat operation in Helmand Province, Afghanistan.

After graduating from Jacksonville State University, Jacksonville, Ala., in 2006 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice, Comfort was commissioned as a Field Artillery Officer.
He initially served as a company Fire Support Officer and Platoon Leader with the 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment and 1st Battalion, 320th Field Artillery Regiment, both of the 101st Airborne Division, Fort Campbell, Ky. He deployed to Iraq from October 2007 to November 2008 with the 101st.
He then completed assessment and selection for assignment into the 75th Ranger Regiment in February 2010 where he subsequently served as a Fire Support Officer for Company D, 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment stationed at Fort Benning, Ga. He was on his first deployment to Afghanistan.
Comfort’s military education includes the Field Artillery Officer Basic Course, Air Assault Course, Basic Airborne Course and the U.S. Army Ranger Course.
His awards and decorations include the Ranger Tab, Parachutist Badge and the Air Assault Badge. He has also been awarded the Bronze Star Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal with combat star, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, and Overseas Service Ribbon.
He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal and Combat Action Badge.
Reflected in the many friends, literally world-wide, who have offered comfort to his family, Kyle never met a stranger; only someone yet to be a friend. Of those, he had a special mentor and father-figure in Fred Bremer (Ret. MSG) of Gillsville, GA, who said Kyle was "the son he never had".
Kyle loved many things; his family foremost, but also AC/DC, his motorcycles, his four wheeler, his truck, his dog, Ace, the New York Yankees and Alabama Football. He loved the Army and his soldiers. Being a Ranger was the fulfillment of a dream.
Kyle grew up in Saks, Alabama and graduated from Riverside Military Academy in Gainesville, GA. He was a 2006 graduate of Jacksonville State University and was commissioned into service by the JSU ROTC Department. He was a member of Phi Kappa Phi fraternity.
At the family’s request, a memorial scholarship is being established in Capt. Comfort’s name at Jacksonville State University. The Captain Kyle Comfort Memorial Foundation was created to honor this brave man who was killed in action in Afghanistan on May 8, 2010 while serving as an Airborne Ranger in the United States Army. Our Foundation is intended to respect the service and sacrifice of not only Kyle, but also the many thousands of soldiers, veterans and family members who have served and continue to serve our country with honor. The many volunteers along with the generous contributions of our sponsors and race participants make it possible for the Foundation to continue the good will and assist servicemen and women and their families who are in need.
The Foundation was established to raise money to assist our nation’s wounded military and their families. Financial grants are available to accommodate travel to and from military hospitals, continuing medical care, rehabilitation equipment and modifications to their homes. In addition, support items ranging from games and toys to magazines and comfort items for families in waiting at locations in the U.S. and soon we trust, in Germany are also provided by the Foundation. To date, we have assisted wounded warriors across the United States and locally, including five of our local heroes, SFC Aaron Causey, SGT Ben Tomlinson, LCpl Cody Overton, SPC Josh Wetzel, and PFC Corey Garmon.
